Whether it is a large building or a small renovation project, construction sites can be dangerous environments for all workers. From ladder falls to falling debris to vehicle accidents, construction workers face catastrophic injuries nearly every day. Even safety equipment, unfortunately, can’t always prevent a serious injury.
A recent piece by the Brain Injury Society
sheds some light on the dangers that remain even when a construction worker is properly equipped.
Non-penetrative brain injuries are typically caused when the cranium is violently jarred or is exposed to rapid back-and-forth motions. The internal injuries are caused by the motion of the brain in the skull. In essence, the brain is crushed against its own protective bone barrier. While a hardhat might absorb a great deal of the original impact – and protect the head from the initial strike – it cannot prevent the brain from moving inside the cranium. It’s the same argument the NFL now finds itself in. Designing a better helmet does not necessarily prevent the jarring motion of the tackle itself.
Hardhats provide the best hope of protection from traumatic brain injuries (TBI). TBI can either be mild or severe and are commonly typified by concussion. Symptoms of TBI, however, can be far ranging including persistent headaches, blurred vision, memory loss, cognitive impairment, mood swings and personality changes.
Any head injury – even something you might consider a minor bump – should be taken seriously. A minor fall, for example, might cause enough cranial motion to impact either the structure or function of the brain. It is wise to discuss your injury and legal options for monetary compensation with a construction accident attorney .
