Reporting Workplace Injuries

In Iowa, workers have 90 days to report workplace injuries. This is the law. Many employers shortcut that by creating special company rules requiring notice of injuries on the same day of the injury. But the bottom line is that a worker has 90 days to comply with the law. The boss might complain that you didn't comply with the special company rule and report the injury immediately but there are all sorts of reasons why a worker might delay in making the report.

We know some employers require workers to sign an injury form each pay period. To get paid the worker has to acknowledge no work injury. Even that rule does not overcome Iowa law and the 90 day time period. This payroll tactic is about the same as a requirement that the injury must be reported on the same day. The employer can do it, but the law is still 90 full days to report the injury.
