Stop Nursing Home Abuse

Placing elderly or disabled loved ones in a nursing home creates a bond of trust that skilled and compassionate professionals are providing the highest standards of care. Reality sets in for family members when poor screening of applicants and understaffing of employees create dangerous and deadly conditions in a place where care and safety should come first.

A recent study was conducted by the Special Investigations Division of the House Government Reform Committee. The findings revealed that out of 15,000-plus nursing homes in the United States, thirty percent have been cited for almost 9,000 instances of abuse between January 1999 and January 2001.

The discovery of abuse or neglect force many families to provide care on their own. Most are uneducated, untrained and unprepared for life as a caregiver. Others are less concerned about qualifications and choose to ignore the best interests of the disabled parent or spouse. They become more interested in undue influence over medical care and finances.

A recent, high-profile case of elderly neglect received national news coverage in the summer of 2014. The children of legendary broadcaster Casey Kasem accused his wife Jean Kasem of hastening their father's death by removing him from a convalescent home. The broadcasting legend had been suffering from Parkinson's disease and Lewy body dementia for years.

Kasem escaped criminal charges, even though physicians from a Seattle hospital diagnosed a Stage III bedsore and a urinary tract infection. Prosecutors cited "longstanding profound health issues" that made it impossible to prove abuse or neglect.

Increasing awareness by putting a spotlight on this deadly problem is an important step to ending the exploitation and harm done to those who cannot fend for themselves.
