1 dead, 2 suffering from workplace injuries

A wall collapse on a job site has claimed the life of one 19-year-old construction worker and injured two others. Wall collapses are all too common on construction sites, as Iowa workers are already aware, and they are a leading cause of workplace injuries and deaths. In this case, local rescue services are working in tandem with OSHA to determine the cause of the accident.

The accident report states that at approximately 11:37 a.m. on Sept. 2, local fire department units responded to a call to an active construction site. When they arrived, they discovered that the three workers involved had been excavating around a cinder block wall when the wall collapsed. They rushed the 19-year-old man to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The other two men were transported to another hospital with injuries described as serious but not life-threatening. There had been previous complaints lodged against the owners of the property, alleging unsafe work conditions. The New York City Department of Buildings has also become involved in this investigation, and it is hoped that further accidents will be avoided.

Workplace injuries and deaths, when preventable, are even more tragic, as Iowa workers can attest. Thankfully, the family of the deceased man will likely be offered a compensation package to help them through this difficult time by covering final arrangements and providing a financial package for the victim's covered dependents. Similar compensation packages will likely be available to the injured men to help cover their medical costs and shore up their own missed wages during their recovery.
