Iowa recognizes workers who died due to fatal workplace injuries

On April 28, the state honored its working men and women who have been injured or killed on the job. Workers Memorial Day is observed yearly in Iowa and elsewhere, and those who have perished due to workplace injuries are remembered and celebrated. While compensation packages go a long way toward helping the families of those tragically killed on the job, a day of this nature can help to heal the wounds left by the loss.

Workers Memorial Day is observed across the state, with a variety of memorial services taking place in all major population centers. The Iowa Federation of Labor AFL-CIO is responsible for planning these events, which are also meant to generate awareness about worker safety in a variety of fields. State and federal representatives are routinely invited to speak at events being held statewide.

Of course, it is important to remember those who have been lost to injuries. However, it is equally important to consider the causes of workplace injuries. Organizations like the Occupational Safety and Health Commission work tirelessly to follow up on injury and fatality cases to determine how the accidents took place and how they can be avoided in the future.

Workplace injuries are notoriously commonplace on job sites across Iowa. It is hoped that bringing more attention to these issues will help employers, contractors and OSHA to work more effectively in limiting their frequency and their severity. In the meantime, the families of those who are remembered on Workers Memorial Day will be supported by compensation packages designed to shore up lost wages and help cover final arrangements.
