Fatal accident being investigated by OSHA

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is in the midst of investigating a tragic death out-of-state, according to sources. The fatal accident that killed a construction worker on April 9 is currently being looked into by OSHA, which hopes to determine what caused the accident to occur. Iowa workers are familiar with the process OSHA must go through to determine responsibility and further safety measure implementation in the case of worker deaths.

Reports have suggested that the deceased man, a 26-year-old crew worker, was driving a payloader that was attached by a chain to a cement mixer. The mixer had become stuck, so the man was attempting to pull it free. Unfortunately, the chain snapped during his attempt, striking him in the cab. The force of the impact killed him on the spot.

OSHA lists this sort of injury as a "struck by" injury, and says such incidents are preventable through proper training and maintenance of equipment. The company for which the victim worked has previously been cited by OSHA for infractions, so this investigation could result in serious censure for the contractor. The investigation is currently ongoing and no final word has been publicized about the accident.

A fatal accident that could have been prevented is perhaps even more tragic, as some Iowa readers are aware. Thankfully, state law allows for workers' compensation packages to be provided to the family in the form of benefit payments meant to ease the burden of final arrangements and loss of a worker's income. The family will likely look forward to such support during their time of grief.
