Structural collapse kills worker

A man is dead after being trapped under a falling wall on a construction site, according to reports. Iowa construction workers are keenly aware of the ever-present danger of a structural collapse on a work site, which is the type of tragic accident that appears to have taken place in this case. In the wake of such a tragedy, the family of the deceased worker will likely be the beneficiary of a compensation package to help cover final arrangements.

According to the report filed with OSHA, the accident happened around 7:30 a.m. on Feb. 20 at the site of an under-construction apartment complex. It is unclear what caused the wall to collapse, but it has been confirmed the man was trapped beneath it for some time before being freed by his co-workers. He was free of the wreckage by the time local emergency services arrived.

The man, who was identified as a 58-year-old worker, was rushed to a local hospital with severe injuries. The medical examiner declared him dead later in the day. OSHA was notified as per state rules regarding workplace accidents and will be conducting its own investigation into the accident. So far, the authorities have not determined a cause for the collapse.

A tragedy of this type is not unfamiliar to Iowa construction workers, who live with the danger of structural collapse every day. Thankfully, state law dictates that the family be offered a compensation package designed to ease their financial burden during their period of mourning. Such a package may be directed toward funeral arrangements, as well as provide compensation for the deceased's lost wages.
