Concussions From Sports

In 2014, the National Football League agreed to pay more than $1 billion to retired football players who are suffering the effects of head injuries from their playing days. Think about that... the NFL now admits that football will cause brain injuries and the harm can last a lifetime.

Medicine has established that playing impact sports such as football, wrestling, or soccer has a direct relationship to brain injuries in the participants. No athlete is too young to be subject to the risk of concussion in high velocity sports. A child in pee-wee football who is using improper technique or using poor or ill-fitting equipment is just as prone to a brain injury as a professional athlete. These brain injuries are usually called "being dazed," or "having your bell rung," or "concussions."

With the medical link established, and with major sports organizations such as the NFL now instituting strict concussion protocols the game has changed for universities, colleges, and school districts which choose to field football programs. Now there is a duty to properly teach the game, provide proper equipment, and most importantly follow strict concussion protocols with students - athletes. Football crazy states such as California, Texas, and Alabama have set up rules for high school football that limit the amount of contact during a practice week and forbid contact drills during the off-season.

These new rules and procedures lay the foundation for the responsibility of the sponsoring organization, and its staff to protect the athletes. A failure to reasonably protect the athletes is negligence under Iowa law. It's one thing to play a fun game. It's another to be left with a lifelong injury to your brain just because the team didn't follow its own rules.
