2 construction workers killed in fatal accident

Two contracted civilian workers are dead following a serious accident at a naval ship facility, according to local sources. Iowa residents are familiar with the WW2 landmark where the fatal accident took place. Firefighters responded to the scene, and it is likely that the local branch of OSHA will be conducting an investigation as well.

The accident report states that a 911 call was placed at 10:19 on the morning of Dec. 10, notifying authorities that a 10,000-pound buoy had fallen approximately 70 feet, partially striking two workers. Two other workers who were working on the same floating concrete block were injured while trying to avoid the buoy. Those two individuals are listed as in stable condition as of this writing.

The other two workers who were partially hit did not fare so well. One of the two men was killed outright by the falling buoy, while the other survived long enough to be rushed to a local hospital. He later succumbed to his injuries as well. The Navy has issued a statement expressing their condolences to the families of the deceased men.

In order to ensure that a fatal accident of this type does not happen again, Iowa residents know OSHA will be notified to determine how the buoy slipped its bonds and fell. In the meantime, the families of the deceased will be entitled to a bereavement package through workers' compensation that will help pay for final arrangements. The injured men will also be entitled to packages that will help cover their medical bills and shore up lost wages.
