Construction accident injures worker on Halloween

Halloween was very nearly an occasion for tragedy when a construction worker was seriously injured on a job site. The 25-year-old man suffered serious injuries in a construction accident after a rebar wall collapsed on top of him. Iowa residents will be pleased to hear the helmet he was wearing afforded him partial protection from the blow. The man's condition is unknown, but medical professionals believe the helmet may have saved his life.

The man was working on the 29th floor of a construction development around 7 a.m. the morning of Oct. 31. Firefighters had to elevate rescue workers 100 feet into the air to reach the man, using both elevators and ladders. Thankfully, they were able to get to him and transport him to the ground with little issue.

He was transported to a local hospital, where his condition is currently unknown. According to applicable law, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration must be notified of such an accident. Once the agency is made aware, it typically launches an investigation into the accident to determine if safety precautions were taken on the job site and to ensure such an accident does not happen again.

A construction accident of this type does not necessarily speak to a failure on the part of the contractor or the company to provide adequate safety precautions, but the possibility is enough to warrant further investigation. As for the worker, just like here in Iowa, he will be entitled to a compensation package that can help him cover medical costs and related expenses. A package is also available to provide a non-taxable percentage of lost wages during his recovery.
