Man suffers work injury falling into grave

A cemetery worker was injured on the morning of September 5 after accidentally falling into an open grave. It should come as no surprise to Iowa residents that falls of this type are something of an occupational hazard for cemetery workers, which is not to say this work injury was any less traumatic. The man remains in critical condition as of this report.

According to the accident report, the man apparently fell backward into a freshly dug grave, measured at approximately 8 feet deep. The cause for his fall is not known at this time, and cemetery owners have not commented on what may have precipitated it. As required by state law, the local branch of OSHA will likely have been notified of the accident and will launch an investigation into its cause.

The man had been hoisted from the hole using a specially designed basket. He was semiconscious at the time of his rescue and had suffered injuries described as severe. He was transported to a local hospital where he remains in critical condition. His name has not been released to the general public, likely pending notification of family members.

A work injury of this severity could leave the worker crippled or otherwise unable to do his job for a considerable period of time. Thankfully, Iowa workers know that workers' compensation packages will be made available to him and his family to help cover his medical expenses and lost wages during his recovery. It is hoped this will in turn help him to get well and return to work once he is healed.
